BOTANICAL

The Story

I was always fascinated by the details and patterns in nature and I started to work with geometry in my arts degree in 1996. Ten years later, in 2006, I teamed up with a therapist and we created personalised Mandalas for her clients, giving birth to a new era in my art.

I start with my own photography of nature and manipulate them until I create a botanical Mandala inspired image.

I explored the impact and beauty of the Mandala, a symmetrical, circular image that is revered in many ancient Eastern and Western traditions. The Mandala is a representation of the universe and the cycles of life and, as such, can be used as a focal tool for meditation. Inspired by the Tibetan Mandalas, these pictures were originally tailored to individual people. By concentrating on and contemplating the mandala image, working from the centre to the edges and viceversa, feelings of plenitude and calmness arise whilst also developing mindfulness.

After I experienced first-hand the benefits of Mandalas on clients with conditions such as depression and anxiety, I became interested in the impact of its shape, colour and effect on mental wellbeing, particularly when they were personalised. This had an incredible influence on the work I do today.

I continue to work using macro-photography of flowers, foliage and crystals to create these stunning, inspiring and intricate designs. Each one is made by detailed cropping and layering of the photos until a unique image emerges.
